Winter Ascent of the highest peak in the lower 48 states, Mt. Whitney (14,495 ft.)!

Mt. Whitney offers another exceptional training ground for intermediate to advanced climbers wanting to expand their experience in the winter environment. Climbing the highest peak in the lower 48 states is a exciting challenge during the winter months. Learn and practice the skills needed to climb similar peaks around the world. The conditions during the winter months on Mt. Whitney will give you the experience you need to climb bigger and higher peaks in the world as well as to tackle those winter ascents in the lower 48 states.

Includes:

  • Professional instruction/guides
  • Breakfast(s), dinner(s) and hot drinks
  • Group climbing equipment including (as needed): ice axes, crampons, ropes, helmets, harnesses
  • Group camping equipment including: tents and stoves, avalanche safety equipment
  • Permits and permit fees

Excludes:

  • Transportation to the meeting location in Lone Pine, California
  • Personal items such as: sleeping bag, pack, proper footwear, snowshoes & crampons (available for rent)
  • Personal clothing, snack and lunches

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1

We will meet in Lone Pine, California at 7:00 am on the first day for a pack check and issuing of personal gear. We will car pool a short distance to the Whitney Portal Trailhead and beginning hiking up the Portal Trail for one mile before ascending the North Fork of Lone Pine creek. Establishing a base camp in an around Lower Boy Scout Lake at approx. 10,300 ft. level. As we hike, we will be instructing and holding informal lectures on such topics as route finding, pacing, minimum impact camping and preparing for the next days climb.

Day 2

We will climb to a high camp below Iceberg Lake between 11,500 -12,000 ft, with training in the afternoon and preparation for the next day's climb.

Day 3

Up early (Alpine start 2-3 am) for an attempt of Mt. Whitney 14,495 ft. via the mountaineer's route, returning to our high camp by late in the afternoon for a much needed rest.

Day 4

We will have pack up and head down for the long descent to the Whitney Portal and our vehicles along the Portal road, arriving by late afternoon.
