We've always been independent travelers but my mate doesn't have quite the desire for cultural adventure that I do. We compromised this year and joined a tour of <a href="/Vietnam">Vietnam and <a href="/Cambodia">Cambodia, finishing up in <a href="/Thailand/Bangkok">Bangkok.
Group travel isn't really for me though I can not fault GAP, the organization we traveled with. The guide was great, the group was small and congenial, and the destinations were almost idea. But I'm a glacially slow traveler and on my own, I'd make the same trip in twice the time.
Still, we enjoyed the trip tremendously. <a href="/Vietnam">Vietnam is a overwhelming, maddening, delightful, compelling, fascinating place. The food is outstanding, the people friendly, it's (still) a bargain. And Angkor Wat, in spite of the crowds, is a miraculous beautiful place.
If you'd like to read about our adventures, there's a complete journal here.

When I booked my trip to the Big Island, I did so with the intent of taking a vacation with my sister, which entailed a much more subdued itinerary. But when Big Sis bailed, rather than seek out another travel companion, I relished the time to explore on my own schedule -- which back home usually entails sleeping in and staying up till the wee hours.

But on the Big Island, the Big Adventures are to be had during daylight, so I found myself waking at ungodly hours so that I could cram in every last ounce of adventure. From a night dive with 14-foot Manta rays to exploring the Waipio Valley via horseback, every last moment of my trip was filled with sensory-overloading moments that made my almost forget I had to return to a cube at week's end.
Day 1: Escape From Cube Life
Day 2: Manta Heaven
Day 3: Paddling to My Death
Day 4: The Southernmost Gaffe in the United States
Day 5: Somewhere Over Pololu
Day 6: Grounded in Hilo
Day 7: To Fly or Not to Fly
Day 8: Don't Make Me Go!

We arrived at our hotel in Anchorage around 3pm. From there we dropped our stuff off in our room an headed out to the downtown area for dinner. Manina needed to sign up for something to do while I'm at work, so we stopped by a travel agency so that she could get a United States Glacier and Wildlife Day Cruise in Whittier. She'll be doing that on Thursday while I'm at work. After that we headed over to the Snowgoose Restaurant and had some beer and dinner overlooking the bay. It was beautiful and sunny and we could see the Air Force fighter jets doing practice runs overhead. After that we met some Aimee and her husband Billy at Humpies for beers. It was a long day so we went to bed around 10pm.
